SOS NAMED COUNTY CONTRACTOR FOR RECYCLING DERELICT VEHICLES AND WHITE GOODS Maui’s campaign to rid the island’s roadsides of junk cars has entered a new phase. Effective 10-01-06 SOS Metals Island Recycling (SOS) will begin recycling these eyesores under a contract with the County’s Solid Waste and Environmental Management Division. In addition, the company has also been awarded a contract to handle discarded appliances. SOS President Sandy Shadrow explained that the derelict vehicle contract calls for one of Maui’s towing companies to transport the vehicles to the SOS facility at the Maui Baseyard in Puunene. There the SOS operation, which has been open since August of this year, is fully equipped and staffed to provide the solution for processing the abandoned cars and trucks that have been a public nuisance, and a public issue, for the past several years, since Maui Metals was shut down by the the State of Hawaii Department of Health. Appliances will continue to be picked up by the County of Maui. To find out when the appliance pick-ups will be scheduled Upcountry residents can call the County of Maui at 808-572-3958, and residents of the Lahaina area, Central and Sounth Maui can call 808-270-7452 . The appliances will then be trucked, at no direct charge to the residents, to the SOS facility. The vehicles and appliances will be processed at the SOS facility at the Maui Baseyard in Puunene. Sandy Shadrow together with his brother Don have invested over a million dollars in their business in Maui. “We
made a commitment to fund our Maui operation when there was no guarantee
we’d have any business at all. We have created a state of the art
facility, cost effective, and environmentally safe. We plan to be
operating here for a long time to come.” Shadrow went on to explain
that SOS has been busy processing and shipping, for sale, a variety of
recyclable metals. Included are old jet-ways from Kahului Airport,
scrap air conditioners, brass, copper, aluminum, old insulated copper
wire, stainless from restaurants, and many other commodities. “With
the variety of equipment we have at our scrap yard, any metal product
can be handled on a daily basis.”
